Why do people use these terms?

Is it because they can't properly spell the word PREGNANT?

The definition of Prego is as follows:
"Prego" is Italian for "I pray", and is usually used in response to "grazie" ("thanks"), where in English one would say "You're welcome."

I don't know, maybe it's just me, in all my hormonal glory, but these two words and any derivative thereof just get my goat...

Any insight is appreciated!

They say Prego or Preggers for the same reason that people abbreviate things...for instance instead of 'because' people will say 'cuz'. I wouldn't read too much into it...I know a girl who says preggers sometimes because she said that it doesn't sound as formal as pregnant does. I'm pretty sure most of them know how to correctly spell Pregnant they just choose not to say it that way. Does it make you crazy when people say that they have a 'tummy ache' instead of 'stomachache'? They are just somewhat slang terms. They could also be using those words because maybe it makes them not stress out about their 'condition' as much. Pregnant has a stress derivative in it...I think anyway. Prego and Preggers just sound more fun-loving and relaxing. Try not to let it bug you so much. I know it's easier said than done.

Believe me I know where you're coming from...I can't stand the word 'Tote'...it seriously makes me crazy. For reasons unknown...it just does.

Yes. Its probably your hormones.

People say "preggers and prego" as a slang term to shorten the word. No one intends for it to be rude or anything like that. I doubt they use it solely because they can't spell pregnant either.

If it really "get's your goat", then just affirme them that you'd rather they not call you a "Pregger or Prego!". Just say, I am pregnant if that's the word you are looking for? They will probably not take that offendly.

The hormones from pregnancy gets you worked up over nothing, no need to be embarrassed though, we all get like that! You will come across even more things that "get your goat" in the months to come!

Good Luck.

Yup. Its probably hormones. lol

If it bothers you that much, the next time someone says, "So, you're preggers?!" Simply say, "No. I am pregnant though." They'll probably laugh, but at least you'll make yourself clear that you don't like the slang term. I personally HATE "knocked up". 14 y/o girls get "knocked up". A married woman does not get "knocked up". They get pregnant. There's a difference. lol

The hormones are making you get worked up over nothing. We all do it though. Trust me, lots of other silly, pointless things will "get your goat" in the months to come.

I particularly like the term 'Knocked Up' actually!

No really, I don't have a problem with people using those terms, each to their own really. I think its an affectionate way to describe the 'condition' a woman is in. I don't its meant to be derogatory or anything. Just a personal preference I suppose.

I don't really care about the prego and such, its used so often, I don't really give it a second thought. :) I don't mind a belly touch, but the belly rubbing drives me nuts! Its kinda creepy!

its just a fun slang term for pregnant. a girl i work with was pregnant not long ago, and for fun, some people called her "Ragu" (playing off of Prego, get it?) it was just a joke thing, happy for her pregnancy and fun.

I just think it's cute. I can certainly spell "pregnant" but one gets tired of typing out long words, especially when pregnant. It gets tedious. It's mostly a pet name for it anyway--an affectionate term--at least, for me.
