and then they called me back and said that they wouldn't see me until I had seen my primary doctor.
I DONT have a primary doctor, and I was coming to them because I haven't had a period in almost 4 months.

Why would they refuse service to me (I was nice and they were nice) because I don't have a primary doctor when I was going to them because of something related to their practices?

They are an open clinic, and you don't need referals to go there. Good thought though. :)

I have health insurance, and this place is an open clinic, not a "referal needed" type situation.

I dont HAVE a primary doctor, and I've never gone in for pap smears or anything else. In fact, I haven't been to the doctor in years.

They made the appt's for me just fine (they made two, one to see what was wrong, and the second as a follow up later in the month) and then called and said that they couldn't do it because I needed to see my primary doctor.

Then, they said to call them once I had seen my primary doctor, and to let them know I was ready to come in and have an appt.

My mom goes to this place and her primary doc IS in the clinic that I am speaking of. So I don't see why they wouldn't be my "primary doc" or atleast see me.

My insurance covers this clinic, by the way.

If you have health insurance, it could be their fault. Certain health ins. companies wont pay for a specialist such as an OB/GYN until you have a referral from your primary doctor. Since you didn't have a referral from your primary doctor, they wouldn't have paid for the OB/GYN visit. Which is silly since you don't have a primary doctor.

This doesn't seem like the case though, because if it were, they should have explained it to you, plus you said it was an open office.... Just throwing it out there as an idea though.

A similar thing happened to me when I was pregnant. I had to go out and find a primary doctor, have them give me a pregnancy test, then have them send the referral to my Ins. Company, wait to get it approved, and THEN I was finally allowed to see the OB.

If you were going to pay out of pocket, I don't see why they would refuse service, unless they wanted a GP to rule out any non-OB/GYN causes first. Maybe you could call them back and ask for an explanation?

Edit: Since none of our ideas would make sense for your circumstances, it may be simplest to just call them today and ask what's up.

In my experience, it usually goes according to your insurance and most insurances let a woman use a Gyn as a primary MD.

Call your insurance co. & check it out.

Do you think your pregnant? Then you can go to Planned Parenthood or org. like that for a check up.

Don't know how old you are but another thing that can cause no period is an eating disorder.

Good Luck

They obviously need a referral before they can see you. You need a primary doc to handle your medical needs and yearly physical and pap smear and pelvic. Who do you normally see for you yearly physical with pap and pelvic? The doc you see for that is your primary doc. Some clinics are associated with certain HMO's and you cannot use their docs without having a referral from your normal doctor. You must either choose a new doc or get a referral from the doc that usually handles your medical problems.

Depending on your financial situation, you might be better off trying a community health services center or family planning. If finances are not an issue and it is truly something like an insurance requirement, schedule an appointment with a family doctor (as a new patient). They can do a pregnancy test and refer you on to on OBGYN if needed.

they must have something in their records indicating that you have an insurance plan that requires referrals from a primary doctor. If that is not the case, just tell them what insurance you have and then go for the appointment.
