how much of a gap should i have when stick welding? should i leave a big gap or have no gap at all?

While it is possible to fill gaps, you should not need any gap to weld. The aim is to have the parts touching. Filling gaps slows down the welding and leads to poor welds.

If you are talking about the gap between your parts to be welded, a couple of the above answers are good. If you are talking about between the electrode and and the metal it depends on the type of electrode you are using. In general, to wide a gap will cause splatter and loss of puddle control. To narrow and the rod will probably stick. You need to practice until you can maintain a smooth arc.

that all depends on the thickness your welding, on heavy plate like3/8in or more a small gap would be wise for 100% penetration, stick welding usually gets good penetration and no gap on thinner material is needed, and will simplify the weld process

the ideal gap should be about the thickness of the material you are welding.
