Yes, because I don't want to hurt their feelings by letting them know I'm either not interested in what they are saying or not understanding...
I do that most of the time when people gossips about someone to me, I don't feel like listening to it... ^_^
But if I know they are saying something important, I won't want to just nod and smile, I will ask again what they mean...

yes! i think the "smile&nod" is one of the best besttestestest "moves" or gesture ever hehe.. it usuuually works out fine except for one time when my mom was yelling at me and i was singing in my head so i couldn't even hear(i mean, i could physically hear, but wasn't listening to the words..i just heard..noise...lol..ya know?) what she was saying and somewhere along those loud words she was saying she asked me to do a bunch of chores..i didnt hear that part and didnt feel like arguing with her..and i smiled and nodded...it got me in trouble that time cause i didnt go out for a whole weekend, i was stuck at home doing a ton of stuff around the house! :/ other than that time, it always works out fine :D cause i smile a lot anyways so all i really have to do when someone (mostly teachers..) are giving me a boring speech is add a litthol nod to my smile n i'm set! no one gets hurt..hehe..or when i didnt understand/hear what someone said and i dont feel like saying "what? :?" i do the smile and nod =.]..i also do it when someone says something nice about me or asks me something that i dont want to give a long answer to or hmm..yea.a few other times too hehe..xoxoxox

I do that if I don't hear someone. First, I ask what they said, and when I can't understand them again, I nod and smile... Confuses people most of the time, but it's not my fault they don't speak well!

Yeah... It's really embarrassing when they catch you doing that too. Especially when you're nodding when you're supposed to be shaking your head. Hah. I guess people just nod and smile because they don't want to admit that they're bad listeners. I do it all the time... :)

That or something like what exactly do you mean by that?
Hoping to get a better explanation so I can try and figure out what it is they ARE trying to talk about.
