Peter Jackson's Dead Alive is chock full of sweet gore. The main charactor takes out half a town full of zombies with a lawn mower in one scene.

The goriest I've seen is "Versus"
"Black Christmas" (the remake) is one of the nastiest I've seen though.

Agree that "Dead Alive" is the goriest, but it is also schlocky and campy.
Most realistic gory movie is "Hostel".

"Dead Alive",directed by Peter Jackson. it's completely over the top. i remember one scene where the people are slogging through a house full of dead zombies and the blood is waist deep!"Re-Animator",directed by Stewart Gordon,is right up there too.and ,"El Topo" had quite a reputation in its day.it was directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky.it has finally been made available on dvd.

dead alive was really bloody, but it was really exaggerated and cheesy- on purpose,
as for serious and bloody, i am going to go with 'the addiction.'
