Hi, I have black beard algae, and it's horrible. I have already cut back on light and feeding, so I don't know what else to do... I have a 100 gallon tank with Gold Severums and blood parrots in it also a catfish and a plecostumus. I was wondering if there were any fish that could live (without being eaten) that could eat the black beard algae. Thank you lots! I also have a 20 gallon tank with barbs in it that has black beard algae.

Nothing eats Black Beard Algae... The only way to remove it is manually (unfortunately), or kill it by starving it out. If you attach Java Moss to driftwood, rocks, or decorations, it will be able to out compete the algae by taking the nutrients, starving the algae, and killing it. To prevent it from returning, keep up on weekly water changes of 15-25% to prevent nitrates from rising as well as other nutrients. Contact me if you have any questions.

~EDIT: As we discussed in an email, you could also remove the afflicted decorations and treat them with an algae killer, or a 10% bleach solution overnight, and then allowing it to dry for a day (or add a double dosage of dechlorinator).

~EDIT 2: As I already stated, different fish will eat many kinds of algae, but not BBA...

A Siamese algae eater (NOT a Chinese) will eat this, but I have a feeling your cichlids might be rough on them! They should do okay in the tank with barbs, though.

Another thing the algae doesn't like is higher pH levels, but I don't know how well your cichlids would tolerate a pH change. You might try adding a little bit of coral to the tanks.

You can look through the link below for other suggestions.

This is a tough algae to get rid of,

Instead of getting a fish that will eat it, try putting in live plants that will use the nitrites and nitrates that feed the algae.
