I would say that periphrasis is a wonderful thing, I am not sure entirely it is apt on this forum unless there is some pseudo-intellectual tool on here that is winding you up, in which case, unload upon thee.

Sort of. If those "Big Words" as what you call them, are old school words, they are just showing off which gets me pissed! I want to punch that person in the face!

Big words!! phew!! They do seem quite intimidating at first sight. But... why do we use words? To communicate, right? I would certainly prefer periphrasis, so that the guy at the other end would get the import of what I'm trying to say. Frankly speaking, I do not like it if I have to keep referring to a dictionary at the end of every sentence I read or hear. I'm sure the same is the case with anybody else, except of course in the case of a language freak, which I too can be at times!
Now, things will be different if I'm trying to impress the reader or listener. I would certainly love to throw around big words that leaves them thinking and pondering.
In conclusion, big words do impress me, but only when used in the right place, at the right time, in the right manner.

Big words do not impress me. I feel certain persons utilize them in an effort to impress. What's really funny is when they use them incorrectly.
I don't think periphrasis is wonderful. I'm a straight shooter.

Kudos.
No. The big words do not impress me. What impresses me is "how" words are used in general. Where the words are used. When they are used. The context in which they are used. Careful placement of a word can mean the difference between getting that big raise or being canned.

Well, with such verbal perigrination evident, perhaps this is an opportune moment to compare and contrast the socio-political ramifications of an agrarian etymology in a cybernized society, keeping a weather eye to the horizon, as the vagaries of optionality manifest themselves.

I had a boyfriend my senior year in High School (the only one I ever agreed to go out with) and he was a really smart guy.
He was so smart in fact that I only understood a small fraction of what he said while talking to me because he said words like "Theoretically speaking" among other things and he always left me scratching my head wondering what in the heck was he trying to say?
Almost all the words he used were big and I was not used to that but I thought it was interesting listening to him talk anyway.

But to answer your question, yea I like big words but I just don't understand them.

It depends, my ex used big words to intimidate people with his large vocabulary. He tried to make people feel dumb. People found this quite annoying. Most the time it just made him look like a jerk. However if you are in the right setting with the right company a nice large vocab is a great thing to have.

i am no more impressed by a 12 point font as by a 16 point font. although anything larger than a 72 point font looks so officious that i am subconsciously forced to obey whatever they say, or go where the large 72 point font jet black arrow juxtaposed upon a snow white paper, and affixed to the wall with the cashew colored masking tape tells me to go.

I'd rather hear a few short and simple words than a bunch of big ones that are meaninglessly thrown into a sentence to fluff things up.
