Yes, if you mark lightly it will be easier to get out. David B, she's making a quilt and that means she's sewing on top where it will be visible. Chalk will rub off before she can get the sewing line in, and does not make a precise enough line to follow for quilting. Masking tape is an interesting thought but quilt lines are often intersecting and must be precisely sewn, and masking tape would also mask too much of the fabric and other sewing lines.

Yes - I've been marking mine for 40+ years with ordinary pencil, but do go lightly. I'm assuming you mean quilting lines (on the top). I have also tried fade pencils (fade too quick), and am now experimenting with silver pencil. Chalk was fine, but I rubbed lines off accidentally.

in a pinch you can use a Nbr 2 pencil but don't make lines real dark and when your done spray the quilt with shout or something simular and they should come out. the best thing is to test it on a scrap of fabric from the quilt top.the other thing you can use is a kids washable markers and a green ink pen. BUT TEST THEM TO MAKE SURE IT WILL WASH OUT

I am rather ignorant, but aren't most sewing lines either hid by the seam or destroyed by a scissor cut? If there is a line you must make in an area that will remain visible, could you use chalk or masking tape? Neither of those would leave indelible marks.

Yes it does wash out. But don't press so hard, where you sink the pencil into the fabric. It could damage it.

Of course it will come out. Write on there lightly though.
