Following the American Revolution which threw off a monarchy and created a democratic republic, there was the French Revolution starting in the summer of 1789 and the Russian Revolution beginning in the fall of 1917. The French Revolution relieved the monarch of his head but wound up with an emperor instead. The Russian revolution led to the shooting death of the Czar and his entire immediate family, but the subsequent communist government in the USSR was soon to become a despotic tyranny under Joesph Stalin.
