I think San Jose is a great place...I grew up there so I'm biased. Most of the city is good but like all other big cities it has its share of not so good areas but for the most part there's plenty of stuff to do and a pretty good night life scene. I don't know what your relatives are going to be doing in San Jose but I'm pretty sure they won't be bored. Cirque du Soleil will be there this month and the San Jose Sharks are fun to watch. Santana Row is a premier shopping area across the street from Valley Fair Mall...the area's most popular mall. There are so many different types of great restaurants to eat at...I could go on and on but I think you get the point.

San Jose and the surrounding communities are all very nice. You have Santa Cruz Beach about 40 min away past the town of Los Gatos. There are great restaurants in Los Gatos as well as shopping and browsing Thur the boutiques.. Then You have Santana Row, where there is up-scale, out door restaurants and shopping. Across the street from Santana Row is Valley Fair Mall. It has Macy's, Nordstrom and everything else you would find at the mall. On your way top San Francisco stop in Palo Alto at Stanford shopping Center for a very pleasant stroll through this beautiful outdoor, upscale Mall. I guess you can tell I like shopping.

You didn't include the ages, sexes, or when your family is coming so here are some general suggestions.
For family activities: siliconvalleymom.com which lists not only the activities but 98% those listed are free.
For other activities in the Bay area I suggest artsopolis.com which lists concerts, plays, sporting events and other activities by date and location.
If your family likes to save money and use coupons then I suggest getting an Entertainment book for zip code 95124 (a random San Jose zip code). Entertainment books are $5 off and free shipping right now. And also visiting Restaurant.com for gift certificates.
I hope they have a great time.

In all honesty, SJ is kinda boring. The downtown is getting better, but it still has a long way to go. There are Sharks games and roller derbys, and plenty of parks near downtown. There's the Repertory Theater that shows plays and musicals. Camera 12 shows big name movies as well as indie flicks. The Winchester Mystery House is interesting. And it's right by Santana Row, an upscale outdoor mall. Get a burrito at La Victoria's, a perennial favorite by locals (try the cracksauce... er orange sauce). If you like Thai food, try House of Siam. By the looks of the list I've got going, it seems like there's just stuff to do in downtown, and I'd say that statement is pretty accurate. If you're there for a visit and can't resist San Francisco, hop on the CalTrain right across from the HP Pavillion and take it to the end of the line.
I hope your family isn't moving to the east side of SJ, as it is kinda ghetto there. If at all possible, stay near the willow glen area of SJ. Parents and seniors tend to like this area the best in SJ. Oh, and if you're near this neighborhood you might be closer to Oakridge mall. Not the best mall in terms of shops, but they have a bunch or restaurants and stuff near it. (do you like mini golf?)

I would recommend visiting the great wineries located in and around Santa Cruz. This is a laid back coastal town a short drive to the south of San Jose. There's also an amusement park on the beach and some great restaurants. For info on Santa Cruz wineries visit: http://www.cheers2wine.com/santa-cruz-wineries.html

The weather is good, there is a tech museum, a children's museum, Winchester mystery house, Ice Skating. The weather will be mild and you are less than an hour from Santa Cruz beaches, the restaurants of San Francisco and professional sports teams in three different cities
