Roman emperor Caligula 37 to 41 CE (stabbed to death by his own guards in January 41 CE)

Anyone who proclaims himself a living god has to get my vote for grandiose and pretentious.

Excerpt from a Wiki source below :

Caligula began appearing in public dressed as various gods and demigods such as Hercules, Mercury, Venus and Apollo. Reportedly, he began referring to himself as a god when meeting with politicians. Caligula took things a step further and had those in Rome, including Senators, worship him as a physical living god.

Flashman. He has revealed himself to be a cad, a bounder, a liar, and a rascal. He readily admits to cavorting with the greats of their day, getting medals for things he did not do, and having a great time of it. God, how I wish I could be as cool as Flashy. He really showed Vickie a thing or two. Alas, we only have two possible pictures of him. Fraser writes of a great character worth reading. I only hope he writes the final installment of his adventures in the American Civil War

Very good question. Thanks.

He may not take first prize, but he would be right up there. Who? Maximilian I of Mexico.
