Many politicians wanted to get face time on TV and other media so they showed up, got on tv, made like they were "managing" things. You wanna know something? They could have been in the Bahamas and it wouldn't have made any difference. The fires and aftermath have been handled by fire fighters, law enforcement, some military, and tons and tons of citizen volunteers. The politicians, local and national, didn't do one constructive thing to help with the fires or evacuations or emergency shelters.

It will take some time for the personal Homeowner Insurance Co. to determine how much they will pay then the govt will figure out how much you and I will pay so be patient.
And if you think the fires were something just wait until it does rain and the mud slides start because of all the vegetation that was lost.
You and I will get the bill for that also.
And whose fault is all this.
The arsonists = partially. Only that it happened now instead of next week.
The President = not this time as the Pres wanted to clean out the under brush but was stopped by ????????
Liberals protecting the spotted owl or what ever the endangered species of the month is.
Believe it or not we've been through all this before except back then it was national forests that the environmentalists protected until they very nearly killed it.
Another reason I have no use for Big Al and his band of earth savers.
They don't know what they are doing.
Some controlled burning every few years cleans out the tinder and makes for a more usable forest for the animals and us.

Visited SD this past week, passed a lot of fire trucks northbound on I5 200 miles away!
Everything seems to be under control. Fires are not all out yet, but pretty much contained if not out.
Public is calm and setting about the task of cleaning up an sorting out what needs to be done to rebuild.
There were still some folks at Petco Park when we arrived - not sure if they were sill there 5 days later when we left.
That all was calm and orderly is a tribute to the top level managers - in this case Schwarzenegger can take credit for that, as can other leaders on down.
To the extent that FEMA or other Federal agencies were involved, even though it was a lesser task then Katrina, then I suppose Bush gets credit for not having folks under him screwing up.
The previous answerer has blinders on. Forest management policies have been in place fro at least 100 years. At the time they seemed like a good idea, now maybe a change is needed, but it is not such a simple matter as to just light a few fires here and there to clean things out. There is a LOT of land out there, in CA and elsewhere. It is gong to be a tough problem to solve and put into production.
