I have never done it before. Should I just bring along a whistle? I am so excited about my mini vacation, but not sure how to get a taxi. I have never gone anywhere without my car.

All you do in Chicago is raise your hand high, and a cab will race towards you.
If you´re staying at a hotel, the doorman will activate a yellow light on the building, and will flag a cab for you-tip him/her a dollar for doing so.

Depends what city your in. Some cities like Colorado Springs & Phoenix won't allow cabs to pick-up flaggers.

Go to the side of the street and just flag them down. Kinda wave, y'know? As if you were flagging down a passing motorist for help.
