You should buy locally because board lengths vary greatly - a 161 board may be shorter than a 158 depending on manufacturer and model depending on how they measure it.

Do you have a Sports Authority near you - very good pre-season prices. I have purchased several boards for under $200 and didn't have to pay shipping and knew exactly what I was getting.

Good Luck

www.dogfunk.com is a good site.

To get started, I bought everything on sale from the season before, and probably paid about $300 for my board, $100 for my bindings, and $100 for my boots.

If you buy stuff on sale, you can probably get a decent setup for $500 or so.

Edit: Don't go to Sports Authority! or any other stores like that, such as GI Joes. The people there generally don't know what they are talking about, and the selection is generally pretty limited. Go to an actual snowboard shop or outdoor sports shop. The selection will be greater, and you can get advice from people who actually know what they are talking about.

I would never buy a used board. But it depends on where you plan on going with your riding. Boards "die," they loose their flex, and the bases get eaten up. If you plan on doing any kind of jumping or anything past beginner, then don't get a used board.

And don't ever buy a new board that retails for $100. It will be a total piece of crap, and a waste of money.

If you plan on riding at least 10+ days a year, then I would suggest getting a decent setup you can grow into.

Well I am in the industry so I didn't have to pay much to get started. But if you get a board that is 1-2 years old they are going to be much cheaper. Check out some of the online shops, they have plenty of good deals. You should be able to get a board, bindings, and boots for less than $500.

$350 - $400 for a package (boots, bindings, and a board) i got a burton talon, 155 wide. this is a VERY good deal for the board, bindings, and boots i got, i didn't sacrafice on quality and im glad i didn't.( i got %60 off!)and then i already had the snowpants, jacket, gloves act. i didn't buy a helmet, but i would suggest one, as falling when the edge of your board catches when you try to stop, sends you flying through the air and its very painfull. im getting a helmet this year for sure, they dont look stupid when you snowboard, i actually thing their cool. i also bought a tool - $5, wax - $10, i didn't buy a waxer thing, i used an old iron, try not to use a good one, as it may ruin the iron if you mess upp. a stomp pad $12.

definantly try to buy used stuff. go to your local sport shop and browse for one that is the right size and feels comfortable. boards usually go for $100 to like $350. which is alot. then you need bindings which are about $100. then boots go for like $50 to $100. like i said, to get away from these expensive prices, try to buy used stuff, thats wut i always do.
