my father in law has always been interested in motor cars, he is a engineer, the problem is i just bought a project car 66 mustang. I've asked people certain questions on restoring the car and they have always suggested the way i would do things. the problem with my father in law is that he likes to go for the quick and cheap alternative of doing things "right". i'e reverting in floor pans as opposed to welding or using sheet metal over buying floor pans, or any primer in the shed compared to buying paint and spraying with a hvlp gun. how could i politely tell him that I'm doing it my way - keep in mind my car is in his driveway and i've only been married to his daughter for 6 months.

The majority of the answers are correct in that tact should be used as to not insult the guy or hurt his feelings. You may also wish to mention the 1966 Mustang is a bona fide classic car and it would be worth more if the car was put back in shape closest to the way it came from the factory.

Answerer Daniel has advised the correct way of facing the situation. Try to tactfully suggest to him to just supervise how you are doing it and make suggestions but let you accept or amend them. If possible take up the matter through you wife.She would be in a better position to handle the matter. It is quite possible that back home your wife and other members of the family had on many occasions been required to face similar quick=fix situations which afforded only temporary relief. You wife would probably route her request through her mother who would be in a much better position to handle the situation.
If nothing helps prepare yourself to sacrifice the car if you desire to drive your house smooooothly.

I would say to him that you are really excited about working on restoring it and that you have some great ideas in mind. Thank him for offering to help and tell him that you will let him know about whatever he might be able to do to help. Then do just that. He doesn't have to be completely involved in the work just let him help out. For example, you go buy the primer, paint, etc that you want and ask him to help you paint. That way you are making the decisions but he feels involved.

Look him in the eyes say pops i know you love to help me and love to save me money but i would rather not take the fast road in repairing this car i want to keep it for a very long time and i dont want to have to repair it every month i prefer maybe 1 every 5 years if that even.

what you need to do is be polite and tell him that you appreciate his help. but you do not want to cut corners., and that you want the best for this car so it will be an a original 1966 mustang.
and if this fells, ask your wife to tell him lol!!

Beat It You Lazy Ol Deadbeat!!! If I Were As Lazy As You, You`ll Never Have Grandkids!!! No matter how nice you try to be, he probably won`t take it very well. Since your car is in his driveway, you`ll have to suck it up, & put up with it, or find somewhere else to work on your car.

Have a man to man convo about it. Be honest, go straight to the point and be firm. He should appreciate you for being straight up with him. It's part of being a man. Don't be a pushover.
PS: If he doesn't like your honesty, there's something wrong with him, not you.
