There is nothing you can do to the battery that will improve battery life, just accept that the battery doesn't last as long as it used to and get used to it. Laptop batteries typically are only good for a few years before they age to the point at which they have unacceptable battery life.
Buying a new battery is also somewhat risky because most of the new batteries are going to be new old stock which will have probably aged almost as much as the battery that you've got in your computer.
Discharging and then recharging the battery as some people will suggest will not fix the problem (though doing it a lot will wear out the battery even faster). Aging of Li-Ion batteries is irreversible.

I have the same problem and my iBook is about the same age. The battery used to last 3 hours or so when I first bought the computer, and now I'm lucky if I get an hour or so out of it. I think the only thing you can do is buy a new battery. A (genuine) new one will cost you about $100.

That's about the life span of a battery. It should be lasting maybe 90 minutes for being that old. If you buy a new one, skip eBay. Latest tests show that 70% of the laptop batteries sold on eBay are fakes and don't work right or hold a charge well.

You probably left if plug in for long periods of time (bad). The cathode and anode of a Lithium Ion or Lithium Polymer cell will inevitably degrade over time and the battery will lose it's charge.
In the future, unplug the battery if its changed and the AC is plugged in and try to drain the battery below 10% and fully recharging it without interruption (even though they claim to be memory-free). This will help prolong its overall lifespan. Same goes for all batteries.

All laptop batteries only work at optimum for the first year. After that is a steady decline.

If it's not a bad battery, you could try to recalibrate it, by letting it drain all the way down (until it goes to sleep) and then charging it back up all the way to 100% uninterrupted.
