Here's a story for you: A family friend who goes back to 1935 with my grandfather has a daughter who has grown up to be quite the high society type. (She drives us all berzerk.)
Anyway, my friend Scott is a self-taught fiddle player, and he happened to be visiting at my parents' house one day when this daughter of my grandfather's friend was there. Scott doesn't know her from Eve, so it didn't much matter to him if he offended her or not.
She said in a stiff upper-lipped way, Oh, you play the violin, and Scott said, no, ma'am, I play the FIDDLE. (He had intended to put her in her place.)
And that's what I think of when you say fiddle.
