I recommend DJ MacHale's the Pendragon Adventures. He is working on book 9 in a series of ten books. It follows the adventures of a 14 year old boy trying to save the territories of Halla from an evil shapeshifter. The author writes and has produced for television for several well known series such as Flight 29 Down and Nickelodeon's series called Are you Afraid of the Dark. He writes very visually, and the books are easy to follow along with being very entertaining.

Try to find "King Dork" by Frank Portman. It is about, well, a dork and his life in his sophmore year of high school. It is really interesting. I am 14 and I am reading it now. It has some vulgar language and suggestive themes. I am sure he will like it nevertheless. I'm not really a reader either but this book is addicting.

I would either recommend the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. or like the person above me, definitely The Pendragon.

Your son may hate to read but reading....its hard to describe. everything else fades away and a movie plays in your head and you sit back with popcorn and you can feel that feeling of pure joy of being pulled into another world..of happiness..and not the present reality.

I'm not sure if they are 300 pages long, but my brother always loved the Homer Price books by Robert McCloskey.

The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. If he's into sci-fi at all, or even just humor, he'll absolutely love it.
Alternatively, if he's more into adventure and head trips, Fight Club.
