I’m a bit confused if there a question like ‘what is the best mainstream animes’, or ‘anime suggestion but not mainstream’.

What which animes belong to what group…
Thx....

Basically...every Anime that you hear about constantly...like...well...
: Naruto, Bleach, Ouran, Death Note, etc...is considered Mainstream...
(And back-in-the-day, i guess Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, DBZ were considered... "Mainstream") ^^

~Mainstream: Is something that appeals or is familiar to the masses.

Mainstream Anime usually have high fan base...(but that doesnt necessarily mean the Anime is "top-notch")... :P
--
Non-Mainstream is basically Anime no one has ever heard about or seen..(which doesn't necessarily make it a "bad" Anime either) ^^

So...yeah... ;3

I don't know, Eva's pretty ginormous.

It's a living shrine of otaku everywhere. :P

Actually, all anime can be considered niche, because the industry itself is niche.

But as explained above, a more mainstream title is one with a huge fanbase and constant exposure like Naruto or DBZ. Titles that people have heard of, have seen.

There are different kinds of mainstream, like the more "adult" Cowboy Bebop and the shonen fare like Naruto.

Really mainstream series, 99% of the time shonen, are generally found running on TV Tokyo, one of Japan's equivalent of ABC or MBC and etc.

ok, let me think for sec to explain..

a mainstream anime in a nutshell is a well known, and highly franchised anime, such as, FMA, Death Note, Naruto, Inuyasha, ect.

and the opposite , non-mainstream isn't real known to the public as well and not as highly franchised in the same way as a Mainstream one such as like: Elfen Lied, Slayers, Romeo & Juliet, Blood +, etc

i hope that i was able to explain well enough for u to understand it =]
