yes, 32bit OSes will only recognize like 3.3 GB
You need a 64bit OS for 4 gigs or more.
At the most, upgrade it to 3 GB
But 2 GB should be more than enough for anything you'd want to run
Any 32-bit version of Vista editions: 3.3 GB
home basic 64 bit: 8GB
Home Premium 64 bit: 16GB
Business and ultimate 64 bit: 128GBs (wow)
But just because your OS can support a lot of RAM doesn't mean that your motherboard can handle it

Honestly, 2 Gig should be just fine for almost anything you are doing. If I had to put a performance gain on 2 Gig more RAM, I'd say you may be lucky to see a 10% improvement.
The biggest bang for your buck is to upgrade the CPU or a new CPU/MOBO combo.
if you are looking for game performance, get a faster video card.
More RAM is easy to add, it just doesn't really do that much for you unless you are doing some heavy video editing or photo editing.

Most computer users have been trained that if you want more speed for your computer, then add more memory. Well, this is true, in certain circumstances. But for most of the times, it really is just bad files in your registry files. Corrupted or missing registry files can make your computer too slow.
The registry is a main part of your computer's Operating System. With time, as you use Windows and install and uninstall programs, your registry will get congested and full of errors. So your computer could slow down. So, if you can clean it up this problem can be solved.Sometimes you can speed computer up by 300%. To clean up registry,You can download a software called regsitry cleaner---Clean registry, remnant, corrupt files and temp files,history,cookies,etc.. This site:
http://www.speeduppc.info/index.php?t=makepcf
lists top 5 registry cleaner, you can download and scan for free.
Good luck!

2Gb is optimum for 32bit OS. Above 2Gb, it is not worth the expense. Vista is not really the culprit, it is when running 32bit OS in x86 hardware. In a 4Gb set up, there is about 750Mb memory hole at the top end that is literally invisible to the operating system.

don't go w/ 4 just the three, and don't listen to those that tell you not to upgrade and i'll tell you why. vista see's the amount of ram available and takes HALF for the o.s itself and you are left w/ the other half to play games, listen to music, etc... so go w/ the larger amount and make sure you have a good graphics card as well vista can be purty if u give it what it wants lol.

I would of thought 2 gigs is more than enough for most applications.
Having 4 gigs is just unecessary overkill.

what you put in your question is true.
There is no point in getting 4 GB ram for a 32 bit OS.
I don't advise 64 bit OS since of compatibility problems.
Save your money for something else if you already have 2 GB ram.
