How do I transfer most everything from my hard drive to a new one?

I have a laptop and want to upgrade the hard drive. Can I just somehow transfer the OS and my other stuff onto the new one? Can I get a 100 g with 7200 to replace my 40 g 5200?

The best thing is to get an image of your current drive with an imaging program such as Acronis, Paragon or Norton's Ghost. They will adjust the image to accommodate a larger drive.
