Hi,

According to the message boards at Word Wizard, the "t" in "t-minus" simply stands for "time."

One responder writes "It’s just an arbitrary way of looking at the continuum of time with the moment of the event in question being considered as the origin or ‘zero’ time (T). This is similar to the way we treat the number line in mathematics with negative numbers being to the left of the origin and positive numbers to the right."

The forums at "Word Reference" offer a similar answer, though one responder poses the question of whether "t" stands for "time" or "take-off." Nobody has a rock-solid answer to that one, but either way, the phrase's meaning is the same.

It's exactly what it sounds like. If a fighter gets knocked down and gets back up, a ref will give him a standing 8 count, checking his signs to see if he's still able to fight. After that 8 seconds, if the ref decides he's okay to continue, then the fight goes on.
