Dan C: Opeth is a progressive metal band, so I doubt you listen to them :0P.
Stone Temple Pilots and Tool also formed in 90, pretty good year actually.

The year I was born they just banged rocks together and called it music.
No, really, I could not find anything about bands forming in 1971. However, I did see that Jim Morrison was found dead in that same year. So even better than the creation of a new band was the demise of The Doors!
I really really hate The Doors.
I'm also expecting lots of thumbs down on this one.
Edit: It doesn't seem so Sarah and I don't listen to enough classic rock to know who formed about that time frame. I will try to search further because now I'm curious.
Edit before I even submitted the first edit: OK, found a few and I'll have to say it's The New York Dolls, followed by Roxy Music. Not even classic rock, I don't know where my head must have been.

The best band I can see that formed in 1990 is Pearl Jam. Dammit.
And to rub salt in the wounds the Lurkers broke up in '90. :(
Although the Byrds reunited for a benefit gig. So the Byrds formed on my birthyear!
Edit: Oh wait, I just noticed you had Opeth, which is '90 as well, never heard anything by them, sorry if I offended by not being impressed that they formed in my year.

Being born in '58 even The Beatles weren't born yet!
Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps were born prior to '58 but I'm gonna adopt them anyway as my 'birth' band since '58 seems to have been a slow year for band births.

1982 was not a good year for my musical tastes, as I don't like ANY of the bands listed!
Anyway, the main ones I recognise are :~
Culture Club
The Smiths
The Pogues
Faith No More
Del Amitri
Everything But the Girl
Why couldn't I have been born 20 years earlier?!

Not many I like were formed the year I was born, but out of the ones listed I guess I'll choose Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

It's a toss up between the 'Gerry Mulligan Quartet' and the 'Sauter-Finegan Orchestra'. I was going to say 'Karlheinz Stockhausen' or 'John Cage', but that would make me seem too old.
Dan C - What about 'Temple of the Dog'? They were formed in 1990. Their 1st (and only) album released in '91...great band, and a 'supergroup' of sorts!

Mine is Marilyn Manson. 1989 seems like it was a poor year for new bands forming, Manson and Green Day are the only two still popular today
Edit: Kyuss and Hole are there too. I like Kyuss, hate Hole
Good question btw
