James and Lily Potter were both Aurors, the magical equivalent of police (or perhaps military personel). Their job was to fight Voldemort and crew, and they were (apparantly) very good at it. They were Magical Government employees. The Potter family was apparantly rather wealthy (as evidenced by James' appearance as he started school--see book 7), and James was an only child. Any property the Potters owned would automatically pass on to his heir (Harry) at the time of his death, including any reward money earned by catching bad guy.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that many people in the magical people gave newly orphaned Harry money (to his parent's bank account) to make sure he would be provided for, as a charity. Since this was given in galleons, it could do nothing but gather dust and interest in Gringotts for at least 11 years. The Dudleys certainly never touched it!
Now, if we follow the regular rules of investment banking, we would expect to see money left in a "good" account to AT LEAST DOUBLE in seven years (left untouched), thanks to interest rates and etc. Since Harry's money is in a MAGICAL bank, we can be sure that it will do slightly "better".
Assuming the (usual) generous nature of human beings, when faced with an orphaned infant of heroes, we can easily imagine Baby Harry starting his financial life with 100,000 galleons in the bank (due to inheiritance, insurance, and donations). I'll let you do the math for 11 years on that one!
The Dudleys were idiots, even if they are imaginary. They should have made very nice with their wealthy nephew!

I certainly am sure that James Potter's family (before marrying Lily) is wealthy/rich. And he and Lily are both Aurors so maybe that's why Harry has many money left for him.:p

Yes...there was some money left over from the insurance settlement, but....
His mom was a drunk. A horrible woman who lived part time with a more " mature " wizard. She enjoyed rum and the occasional Tango with a handsome lad from the South. She was pretty though.
As for Pops....He was gainfully employeed as a common laborer in the peat fields of Scotland.....Speyside I believe. Anyway, he was always sooo dirty. Ashy and covered in soot. A regular ne'er do well in the local pubs. Thank goodness Harry came out as well as he did.

Hmm.. good question! I don't recall the books ever mentioning their jobs.
However, they were prominent members in the Order of the Phoenix.
Maybe they had inheritances?
