So am i wrong, or is it possible to write files (Pictures / Music etc) to a DVD. Because a dvd can store 4.7gb of info', i thought it would be better than using 700mb cd's.

Had a customer with the same kind of problem. DVD will handle more DATA, as you said. Whatever you are using to burn the dvd, make sure its up to date.

You can preformat the disk, and use it just like another removable drive. Copy and Past. But if you are burning files straight to it, you are burning DATA onto a DVD disk. If you try to burn a dvd with data files, it will try to make a dvd movie disk, and that is what is possibly the problem. In nero you would click on burn data cd, the program knows it is a dvd, but will burn it as data. DVD is a format ready made for movies, and oh it also can hold a lot of data. But burning the two are a little different.
Try it, just pretend it is a cd, you will do fine.
P.S. If you are using windows to burn it, get another program.

I'm guessing your trying to use a back up program that wants to write to Cd only, this is because the program is old or windows backup. The newer ones creator 8+ Nero 7+ offer a dvd.
BUT don't rely on it as I have had corruption and non recognizable discs made by both these programs I now either clone the drive using drive image pro or with pictures and documents I zip them and attach to an email to myself.
LET someone else store it

Macs are great, because you can easily burn to a DVD disc, just as you would a CD. I have used a DVD to back up my files with no problem.

If you are using XP then you can burn CD from windows. However you need 3rd party application (eg Nero) to burn DVD.
