You have that right. They do what they were built to do and have no emotions.
Did you ever notice that when you step on a line of ants going along on the sidewalk the remaining ones do not break into tears. They just cart the bodies back to the nest to have for a munch the next mealtime.

All living things have an urge to mate--to perpetuate their species . Did you know that even protozoans exchange protoplasm with each other before splitting into two beings? I only just found that out recently. So, yes. Insects have emotions. And if Freud was right--that there is a tender component to all sexuality--then insects even have tender emotions.

I was watching a show on TV and they talked about this. They showed a preying mantis playing with a guy He would touch the mantis and it would reach out and touch him, so I'm not so sure that some more complex insects may be very intelligent and have emotions The guy would touch it in a different place and the mantis changed hands to touch him back

Yes, insects have some emotions. Not nearly as many as mammals do. Insects do have the emotion of fear; they know when they are in danger. They also have the urge to mate, which is a debatable emotion.

Insects have a simple nervous system (neural ganglia which support body segment function) most of which is used to provide information regarding, sight, chemo-reception etc. So they basically don't have a sufficient number of neural connects to provide for emotional input.

Their brains are much smaller than modern computer chips even though the 3-D structure isn't really comparable. There is just not enough for them to afford much for emotions that we would recognize.

I believe they have "feelings"; hence, why they run or fly like hell when you're trying to kill them! lol
Seriously though, I think there is some sort of emotion there.
