There are two types of genre. A writing genre and a fiction genre. The first describes the style of writing, descriptive, expository, narrative, etc. and the second describes a type of fiction that has certain expected components like sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, etc. See the link below for more information.

It's a category into which things like literature, movies, TV shows, music, video games, etc. fall into. For instance, with literature major genres would be things like Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry. Then taking fiction you'd break down into genres such as Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Romance, Historic Fiction, Suspense, Mystery, Political Thriller, Horror, etc. Non-Fiction could be broken down into Cooking, History, Occult, Political Science, Hobbies, Mythology, etc. Poetry could be Epic Poems, Narrative Poems, Lyric Poems, Dramatic Poems, ect.

As Webster would say:

a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, technique, or the like: the genre of epic poetry; the genre of symphonic music.

--

It's just a cagtegory of things divided into different divisions.

Like:

The soap operas will be paired with the other soap operas.

AC/DC would be paired with the Clash because they are both rock.

It's simple.
