Okay , Say you and some friends get together and decide to have a car wash. Together you decide who will operate the hose , who will put on the soap , who will scrub the tires , and who will dry the cars. Then you pick someone to call brakes and decide when to quit for the day. At the end of the day you all split the money. That is communism at it's basic idea. Jointly deciding the work , selecting a leader and sharing in the profits. Communism actually does work on a small scale like this. Transforming this idea to a government is a much harder concept.

Government controls the economy directly. Imagine one big super corporation - that's the essence of communism. This direct control allows the government to "equally" redistribute the wealth. In a true communist country, private ownership of land, factories and businesses is generally prohibited.
Note that there has really never been a true communist country - though some of the Puritan utopian societies would have come close on a micro scale.

It really depends on what version of communism you are talking about. Because of the countries that it existed upon, from Marx's theoretical concepts to Russia, China, Vietnam, Eastern Europe, and to other communists in rest of the countries (including US), communism means different things to different groups of people.
Basically put, communism is a form of socialism. Properties, work & resources are shared and managed with the whole group in mind. Private ownerships are limited. That is essentially the gist of it. To learn more, check wikipedia:

Wow. Lucky for you that you don't know firsthand. If our government hadn't played an excellent game of chess with the government formerly known as the Soviet Union (Russia now) during the Cold War years, we might all be Communists. It's a philosophy that sounds good on paper, but in actuality doesn't work, as the fall of the Berlin Wall demonstrated. Read up on it on Wikipedia.

The below info is a good basic guide, and very simplistic. Remember, there are few absolutes, and you can have variations (i.e., some of this, some of that).
But the basic points below should give you an idea of the different major economic systems in the world today:
Communism
Private Property: state-owned
Industry: state-owned
Socialism
Private Property: individually-owned
Industry: state-owned
Capitalism
Private Property: individually-owned
Industry: individually-owned

The simple definition is this: Property is shared in common. Everyone cooperates to help everyone else. Everyone does what they are able to do, and everyone recieves what they need to live.

Reference the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx. Basically, Communism is the same as socialism. There are, however, varying degrees to which it is enforced upon a nation, population or people. Hence, the United Soviet "Socialist" Republics (a.k.a. Russia). The United States is a socialist society. It has a "Socialist" Security System for people who choose to be numbered and to perhaps later receive some type of old-age benefit to supplement their retirement. Again, the term connotes a form of government or empirical control, within and around populations. Although there was a well-defined governmental presence in most American private lives prior to the assassinations of the 1960's, the level of socialistic control gained since that time is unthinkable! Intelligent people thought the only way such control could be imposed was through nuclear holocaust or an invasion of hostile enemy forces, against which their tax contributions had built, they believed, an adequate defense. What Americans did not know, and perhaps still don't, was that the consumers of these tax contributions, the Administrators, were spending part of these funds to study scientific means of controlling taxpayers electronically and psychologically. The subject they were studying is called "Political Development." P.D., as defined by Professor Richard Fagen in POLITICS AND COMMUNICATION is "a process of national integration, as movement from less to more national unity." 911 is a glowing example of politics and communication. "P.D.," writes Fagen, commenting on Karl Marx's sack of potatoes, "would involve linking together the individuals, families, and local decisional units which coexist but do not interact in the peasant society." In other words, such rights as privacy, property, religious faith, "exchange with nature," and individualistic behavior, which the citizens of the united States in 1789 believed their national Constitution was protecting, must be COMPROMISED in order for individuals, families, and "local decisional units" to be "linked together" so as to "interact." The key word is "interact."
It is this "interaction" which the national Administrators are paid to supervise, regulate, adjudicate, enforce, and punish. Needless to say, as more complex interactions invite greater government control, a legitimate goal of political development is to COMPLICATE interactions. But first, political developers must cast a spell over the people to get them to surrender self-responsibility in exchange for scientific services; self-sufficiency for the division of labor; God for man. The measure of success in the American way of life might be this 10-point description by an average, fairly well-informed citizen:
1. If the government (county, state or feds) wants you off your property, they can either raise the taxes so you can't pay, or the IRS can seize it without a court order. The FIRST PLANK in the COMMUNIST MANIFESTO calls for: "Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes." There is no such thing as "private ownership," i.e. ALLODIAL TITLE. All parcels of land are deeded in bankruptcy trust indenture or Deeds of Trust. Even if your home is paid off and you have no children attending their public schools, etc., you are forced to pay to support their socialistic agenda. If not, they will steal the property for non-support of their socialist system.
2. Of course, most working Americans are burdened by a progressive or graduated income tax. Yes, this is the 2nd PLANK in the Communist Manifesto.
3. Death taxes take so much that very little can be passed down to the next generation. PLANK 3: Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. People who disagree with government officials are often harrassed, penalized, and fined - if not worse. PLANK 4: Confiscation of property of emigrants and rebels.
5. The United States, as is the rest of the world, is controlled by a centralized, international banking system. The privately-owned Federal Reserve, which creates purchasing power for credit-worthy recipients, was funded with state capital and enjoys an exclusive monopoly. This is PLANK 5
6.The government licenses and controls communication and transportation. This is PLANK 6
7.The government controls corporations because they are created under its seal; government reclaims waste lands and cultivates them, and operates soil improvement programs (which are spoiling more than improving the soil). This is PLANK 7
8. Many mothers have to leave their homes and join the external labor force in order to make ends meet. Of course, most girls aspire to careers rather than motherhood. Labor unions and social security form a vast national army of workers. This is PLANK 8
9. Only 100 years ago, most foods went directly from earth to table. But now, most foods pass through processing plants, where thet are denatured and divided into as many as 100 different products, all packaged and distributed for sale at supermarkets. This development has abolished the distinction between town and country, evening out the population nationally. (Paralleling the increase in processed foods is an increase in doctors, artificial medicines, and hospitals, all rigidly controlled by government.) PLANK 9
10.The public schools are supposedly free, but the children are mainly indoctrinated with what the government (NEA) wants them to know. Tell that to people who are paying the high (RENT) taxes on real estate. This PLANK 10
That, my dear, IS Communism. Welcome to the United Socialist States of America. Please enjoy your stay!
