I've wondered the same thing, but I think many people are just giving quick and easy answers. Lately I've been giving what I feel are well thought out answers which tend to be pretty long in the hopes that I might actually help someone.Maybe I should just go ahead and do the same.Sometimes I write my heart out answering questions and all I get is two points and the occasional thumbs down. So this is my short answer which just earned me a whole two points.Sometimes I wonder if the people asking the questions actually bother to read their answers.

Well, sounds like a time management issue. Right now, the household chores are done, it's not bedtime, the family is spending time together in the same room, and I'll likely spend a whole whopping 1/2 hour here this evening.

How did I get the points? By taking over a year to get them.

Well, you get two points for every answer you give and if someone thinks it is the best answer you get 10 points so it adds up slowly but surely. Make sure when you answer a question that you hit preview, read over what you wrote and then submit. Your profile says that you have only answered 5 questions so if you have sat and answered more than that, you may not be hitting the submit button after you nit the preview button. and so not getting the two points for that. click on the number of points you have and it will show you what you get points for. Remember that points are duducted when you ask a question although you get some back when you mark one answer as best.

I enjoy trying to help people by giving clear, useful answers.
For this, I receive a lot of "Best Answers".
I also learn a lot about the "Computer" by checking all the
questions and if there is a question that I can't answer, I
bring it up to see if there are answers from others.

There are no requirements to participate in this forum.
I just enjoy a few hours doing this. I Don't pay attention to the
amount of points i receive. Probably others do.

Answer more questions than you ask. Answer questions on specific topics that you know something about, so you have a greater chance of being rated the best answer.

For example, I have a better chance of getting best answer by answering a question on cycling or salt water aquariums than I do trying to tell someone how they should go about telling someone that they like them, which would have tons of responses that are all the same.

Well on Saturday im usual asleep so I have nothing better to do on Saturdays. Plus, I answer questions to the best of my abilities so I am able to get the ten points for the best answer. OH and if you ask a question, you get three points for choosing a best answer.

People get so many points because they are experts on these subjects and dedicate their time to help people. They are perfect role models for this community. I try to answer 2-5 questions a day. But most often I forget.

You answer questions, that's a given.
Why do we do it?
Well I recently found this "Yahoo!Answers" it's pretty amazing I think. With the exception of stupid kids messing around on the internet which little or nothing to do.
I find it funny that something so simple can also keep adults just as entertained as well.

What I've got has been accumulated over the course of a year, which I guess is not much considering the time frame. It's a good thing for me that we don't get points taken away for receiving thumbs downs, or else I'd probably have fewer points than you. :)

If it's not that important to you then don't answer. Go take care of more important things. It's just a fun game. Nobody says you need to spend hours and hours here.
