Of course to single people of the opposite sex can be just friends. Nothing is stopping them. I have friends that are guy and we don't think about that kind of stuff.

OF COURSE THEY CAN!!! this is the 21st century people. It's not like the 40's, where if you liked a man as a friend, your father would marry you off. Get with the program.. I have more male friends than I do female friends.. And as for the "can they be friends without one of them wanting more", that is up to you and the man.

Possible - yes.
Probable - no.
I think it depends on how and when they met. I am friends with girls I knew as far back as kindergarten and as recently as college. I am not really friends with any girls I have met since college however. It kind of sucks but unless there are extenuating circumstances, two people of the opposite sex over the age of 25 simply cannot 'hang out' or just be 'friends'.

I have heard people say that it's "impossible" for two people of the opposite sex to be "just friends." But I have many guy friends who I honest to GOD have no other feelings for other than a good friendship. They are like brothers to me.

If one of them DOES want more, it can be very difficult and stressful. But there is no reason that two people, regardless of gender, cannot be friends without any sexual tension. I have several opposite gender friends and, while we do joke around and flirt playfully, it's never in a sincere "I want to get you in the sack" way.

Yes, It can happen but it's rare. When I was in college, I thought it was common, but as life went on, I found out that almost every one of the guys had designs on me, and I'm OK but I'm no prize. I kept some great friends, but I had to endure some overtures. It was worth it.
Good luck, sweetie!

Yes. But if one of the them has already expressed a romantic interest in the other and the other has suggested "let's just be friends" then maybe not.

Well I don't have many guy friends, but this one guy is very desperate. And all though all of my friends (hes kindof a circle friend) and I don't go out with him or even give him any hope, he has still asked quite a few of us out. So they can be just friends, but one of them may still want more.

Yes. I've had male friends before that I thought were fun to be around and cut up with but never felt anything more for.
