It's a symptom of of ones poor "self image" and low self esteem..
Nevertheless, lies re: the "silly" things always escalate sooner or later ... i.e. Slick Willy Clinton. who will go down in history as ... The ... "I did not have sex with that woman" lie of lies, that was quaintly defined by Law as ... "perjury".
He was Impeached as a result, disgraced before the world, and brought shame to any semblance of "Family Values" with his midnight "Cigar sessions" with Monica in the Oval Office no less!
And "still" some people (Only the Ultra Far Left Wing Liberals that is) adore him?
He's their silver tongued darling!
Why?
"Birds of a feather"?

Why do people do the silliest things you ask? Many different reasons, from not wanting to get in trouble to thereason of the truth could result horribly. You never really know, for everyone it's different, but then again...
Because sometimes you really don't know what else to do.

It might just be an impulse they have, or maybe they dont know the difference between lies and the truth. It could be something they do because of their family life, past, their environment they live in, it could be anything, i cant lie, ive lied about some stupid things before too, i dont know why, it just happens sometimes, although i wish it didnt...

The most common reason behind a lie is to avoid punishment.
That aside, it may not seem silly to them. Or the small 'silly' lie is hiding a bigger issue.
Some people also lie to see how far they can take their lie before being caught, and others are compulsive liars.

I think half the time it's just an automatic reflex that can't be controlled. I always find myself telling people i'm tired and then when I stop and think about it for a second I often realize I'm not. Wierd I know.

Hard one.. People seem to lie about things that don't matter at all. I think maybe it's just habit for them sometimes.

There could be any number of reasons. I would guess if the lying is constant, and there's no real pattern to it, the individual just doesn't want anyone to get to know them. It could be a defense mechanism.

some people are pathological liars who do not or cannot tell the truth about anything.
maybe it's an attempt to make themselves appear better than they really are or to make someone else feel better about themselves. for some, this is serious and they should seek help to overcome it.
they tell lies to get out of lies they are caught in, they can't help themselves, it seems.

I don't like liars. I don't think there is ever any reason to lie. The truth is always best.
