I was walking down the corrider of my school one day and noticed that in the courtyard there was what i first thought to be a crow because of its colour but as i observed it i saw that it was indeed a pigeon. Is this common in pigeons? Could it be some sort of Crossbreed?

Yes, their are black pigeons. My brother-in-law used to raise pigeons and they come in various colors and combinations.

Here's a site with some photos:

Where I live, there are a lot of plain black pigeons as well as the classic pigeon color pattern.
There are a lot of varieties produced by breeders, but most of them don't propagate very much in the wild.
