I think it's sad Louisiana doesn't put a lot of stock and public promotion awareness of the state's Native American culture.

It's not where the tourist $$$ is: The charismatic, whimiscal Cajun-French / Creole culture draws tourists to Baton Rouge/Lafayette or New Orleans.

I've met a man who dedicated a major portion of his life to promoting Louisiana Native American culture by opening a small privately owned museum in a city owned / operated park in Southeast Louisiana; the musem today is closed, has been for several long years.

And as if things weren't tough enough: Focused efforts on Katrina rebuilding phases also dominate priorities in Louisiana--so its unlikely we'll see more media promotion of Native American culture of Louisiana.

It depends on the tripe. Some tribes, most notably the Choctow, were very adaptive to European (notably French) culture and methods. They were considered to be of the most "civilized" tribes. Many of the Louisiana tribes shared significant alliances and ties with early French settlers.

Other tribes such as the Atakapa, who were hated by other tribes for their cannibalization of their enemies, were also on relatively good terms with the French. After French complaints at the barbarity of cannibalism, the Akakapa actually stopped the practice.

Louisiana tribes today, for the most part, live in a relatively integrated manor with the rest of rural communities in Louisiana. Many people don't even realize that there are still many Native Americans in Louisiana.

Hope this helps!
