Ok, well there are many definitions of 'emo'

Emo is short for the word emotional, meaning they are full of emotion, not necessarily super hyper and happy but, more like super sensitive.

emo is a style of music, attitude.

as a style of music, its a subgenre of punk rock, some bands that have been classified as emo are:
My Chemical Romance, AFI, The Used, Hawthorne Heights, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, Thursday.

as a attitude, you are more than likely to be introverted, quiet, kept to youself. have a creative, artistic personality.

Some emo stereotypes are:
what they wear, tight jeans, hair that covers their face, dyed hair, black hair, tight shirts that usually has a band on it, black nail polish, they cut themselves, usually depressed, and talk about suicide.

Well, most people consider emo to mean those people(mainly boys) that wear dark clothing, tight pants, got dark eyeliner, and have most of their faces covered with their hair. But that's really more of the skater/goth look. True emo people feel very strong emotions and write lots of poetry or songs and I've also heard they sometimes slit their wrists, although I'm not sure if that last part is entirely true. I have an online friend who dresses in the emo/goth/skater style and he's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He's very quiet, but he's a good friend and does not slit his wrists.

Emo is a genre of music and a label like prep, jock, goth.
Emo (genre), is often confused with mainstream pop-punk, Circle Takes The Square and Hot-Cross are real emo bands. While My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Hawthorne Heights are mainstream pop punk.

The emo label means that you are depressed (mopey).

Short for emotional. A genre of music, technically; branched off of hardcore/punk in the 80s. It's actually dead, but has come back as a stereotype. Look it up on Google to see how a so-called emo kid looks- basically, dyed black hair with bangs slanted over one eye, skinny jeans, band shirts. The stereotype goes that all "emos" are anorexic, depressed, desperate for attention, gay, etc., which is obviously not true and generally very demeaning to all those groups of people. It also describes a variety of music genres- though the actual genre is dead, it pretty much is used to refer to most modern pop-punk, screamo, punk music- nearly all subgenres of modern rock. It's pretty silly, all in all. If people call you that, don't sweat it- it's a ridiculous term, not at all worth using.

EDIT: People who cut themselves are depressed, not emo, by the way. Don't listen to those people. And yes, it pretty much is the same as goth, but "emo" is used as an insult by people who can't quite understand the concept of hairdye and skinny jeans, boys who don't conform to binary gender roles, and music that doesn't sound like anything they're used to. Like I said, a silly label.

Emo is the short form for emotional. Usually when you hear people saying emo these days they are referring to a person that is gothic/punk and depressed or with major emotional issues!

"emo" is the musical genre of "emotional rock". It also applies to the fashion and people who follow the genre. Emo is also sometimes associated with a certain fashion. Emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts which often bear the names of rock bands, studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.

Teens who are overly EMOtional, and like cutting them self. Though if you label them or say this they get even more emotional and throw and emo fit where they think everything they say or do are righteous. They think they are very original and the black sheep in the white sheep world...but their not, they follow the "scene" (another word for emo also), they are a bad rip off a goth and punk (the real black sheep). They like to brag about cutting themselves, and all the emo crap they do so it looks like they are cool. But they just sound like retards. They like to pretend to have problems while being totally blind of a what real problems are.

Now don't get them mix up with kids who like dressing in black and like listening to dark screamo music, those kids who don't brag and just act normal and cool...those kids are not emo. They are just kids.

To get one thing straight, it isn't wearing black and being shy/quiet. Emo is being depressed almost all the time, commonly referred to as scene by dressing in tight black clothes and having bangs over your eyes. Emo's are usually depressed all the time and see the world as a waste of time. Cutting themselves somehow relieves pain, although I'm pretty sure it freaking hurts if you slit your wrist with a razor blade.

Anyway, they're the kids you see at shows who are on speed and 2-step like there's no tomorrow.

To be honest, I don't know but I have a guess. All the goths at our school call each other emo, so I'm guessing that emo has something to do with gothic.

It's stereotyped A LOT, but it's actually just a style.
Most people say things like "emos cut themselves" or "emos are always depressed" but that's all a load of crap.

At first, it was actually a style of music, but then it became a label for the people who listened to the music..and of course, like any other label, it was stereotyped.

It stands for emotional but that's because of the music..
