Cano is definitely a candidate to eventually be the top second baseman in baseball, but at this point Chase Utley is the clear leader.
Utley had better numbers across the board - average, OBP and slugging - and it's not really close offensively. Utley brings more patience, more power, and more speed when he's on base. I'd definitely say Cano is the better fielder, but better defense isn't enough to make up for the fact that Utley is such an offensive force. Cano is great, especially at such a young age, but Utley is still baseball's top second-bagger.

Yes, he is. Cano hasn't put up the power numbers of Chase Utley yet, but he will. Cano just turned 25, and his power numbers have gotten better every year. Cano had an awful two months to begin the season, but ended up over .300, and hit 19 HRs and 97 RBIs. He also hits over 40 doubles every year, and makes great contact. Utely is a great player, but he is already 29 and was in Triple-A when he was 25. Cano hit .342 in 2006, but tried to hard at the beginning and struggled. Like all great hitters, he pulled out of his slump. Cano has a lot of .330, 30 HR, 115 RBI years ahead of him.
For those who say Cano isn't a great fielder, he is. He has shortstop's range, and a right fielder's arm. Larry Bowa, who has worked with him, said Cano will win a Gold Glove someday. He just loses concentration sometime. And yes he is a good baserunner, he just isn't a base stealer, even though he has decent speed.
Pedroia is a very good player, but he's a supporting player, not a star. How much better will he get? Pedroia is just a little guy and will never hit 20 homers or drive in 100, like Cano will. He probably is as good as he will be. I like him, he's a hustler and gets the most out of limited physical ability, but eventually pitchers will figure out that big swing of his.
To Shawn T, give me a break, Cano has a better all-around game than any one of those guys. Your anti-Yankee bias is showing. Why is Pedroia better? Because his average was a LITTLE higher this season? Cano had much better numbers across the board. Uggla? The guy has power, but is a strike out machine, has no range and hits .250. Phillips? Good, but he's been around for a while now and plays in a tiny ballpark which is why he piles up numbers. Kinsler? Got off to a great start, but cooled down, has no range, and would be better at third. Polanco? Very good, but he's 32 and has little power. Cano is just as good a hitter with much more pop.

Lets see how old is he? 25 and chase utley is 28
cano has less experience but on the other hand he is learning everyday and since he's getting better at hitting and already amazing at fielding he'll be the best in a few years

The best? No. One of the best? Yes.
1- Chase Utley- complete package
2- Brandon Phillips- Speed and Power
3- Robinson Cano- Young, high average, potent lineup
4- Brian Roberts- Speed!!
5- Dan Uggla- Power
Just a loose ranking.

Definately Utley.
And for the moron that said defense didn't matter that much, for a second basemen, yes it does. That is a position that relies heavily on defensive abilites, and not offensive prowess.
Why isn't Dustin Pedroia even being mentioned?
Utley, Polanco, Cano, Pedroia, Roberts, Matsui are all very good second basemen.
Uggla is worthless, get him and his .250 batting average out of this conversation. His fielding is as anemic as his batting average.

Cano improved his patience last year, but he still has a ways to go. He did have a great year, and deserves some Gold Glove consideration.
I'd go with Chase Utley as well.
