I need to help a professor editing her book. She wants to know what I charge per line. I've never done this before, so I want to charge her a low rate, but I don't even know what the going rate is. Is there a range someone could give me?

I haven't heard of one-line editing. Usually, it's by the page and at a $3 to $5 charge. Some leeway may be necessary for a larger manuscript, however, because editing can be expensive.

I'd be interested in reading other qualified responses to your question as I am constantly editing short stories.

A published writer that I know has offered to edit my book at a rate of $2 per page. I thought it was too much.
With 12 point fonts and double-spaced, my book is nearly 700 pages (ouch!).

The going rate is $1.50 per page with a $20.00 minimum.

Good luck. I only started editing for a few others AFTER I had two books published.
