My neighbor is screwed...

When you can't even make enough money to pay for insurance, this system isn't so great.
I made an error in my original question, he is 24 years old.
Today he was telling me about a $13,000+ operation on his sinus cavity he had a couple of years ago that the insurance company decided that they wouldn't pay (after first approving the operation...he was a delivery driver for Budweiser...I'm not sure who their insurance company is), so he has been making payments on a $13,000 debt that he shouldn't have.
So, anyway, at the ripe old age of 24, we have another American who will probably declare bankruptcy.
This guy is not a slacker, he works his butt off, and he wants to work.
This scares me because I can't afford health insurance.
I work my butt off, the rich get richer, and hopefully I can break even.
Any thoughts?

I break a sweat every day!
I have NEVER asked for a hand out, you moron!

it's super if you have it and don't get sick.

I still do not understand why people file bankruptcy over med bills.

if my insurance don't pay or cover stuff I just don't freaking pay for it. yeah yeah my phone rings all the time so what... I don't answer it.
Last time I checked medical bills were not a secured debt.
so I don't understand how they keep taking peoples houses.
I think people panic from the collections and what not. if they take me to court I just wont show up woohoo they win but I'm still not going to pay.

my motto is if illegals don't have to pay then why should I.

It is the best in the world that is why the rest of the world is trying to find a way out of their system and into a system like ours. That why people who have the money come here and pay rather than wait, and most likely die, for the so call free health care. You will not like this but health care is not a right and others should not be force into paying for other people health care. It should be a choice as it is within my church. As over taxed as we are my wife and I still are able to help others with their meds bills. Just think if the govt did not take and waste so much of our money how many more we could help. Please read President Franklin Pierce's veto known as the "Pierce Veto" before you judge me. He say it much better.

The U.S. health care system is the only "for profit" health-care system of all modern countries. Only in America is health-care treated as a privilege, available to those who can afford it.

Every other modern country has universal health care. The USA would too... except that the medical industry, that considers the US as their "cash cow", has fought tooth and nail to win the propaganda battle, and with the help of Republicans and Republican administrations, they have so far been successful.

It's time for Americans to fight back. Every American has the right to medical care. "Life" is not an option or a luxury of the well-heeled.

Your friend works full time and has health insurance - his problem is not with the health care system, but rather with his insurance provider.
If they approved the operation and then declined to pay, I would immediately first talk to their manager or CEO and if I got no satisfaction, I would talk to a lawyer.
Our health care system is expensive, no doubt, and health insurance is no bargain either - but it generally holds true that you get what you pay for - and the United States arguable has the best and most advanced health care in the world.

U.S. health care system may not be nirvana, but it's the best the world has. People from all over the world come here for the most advanced medical care. Socialized medicine? Keep it, people in Canada wait months for CAT scans and other tests.

this is what you get with FOR PROFIT healthcare, its not a hard condept to follow , Insurance company takes your money every month, write a bunch of loopholes and what not into their policy's ( I work for a insurance company) than when its time to pay a claim (usually large one) they deny, A company cant make billions of dollars by actually paying for claims, so thats what you get , all these republicans talking this mess about single payer healthcare , why dont these senators are represenitives go ahead and get off their GOVERMENT insurance than talk about how GOVERMENT PAID healthcare would be such a bad thing, not to mention they want to privitize everything, and that is scary

The sad truth, one third of Americans are a few missed paychecks away from disaster. One third can't afford to lose their job no matter how crappy the pay. One third of Americans can't afford a serious illness, medical debts are the number one reason Americans file for bankruptcy. One third of Americans are the working poor, the invisible in our society. They make too much money for any kind of government help, yet not enough for a family to ever get anywhere in life. We have an ethical and moral failure in our government and business, for profit medical care however tops my list of disgraceful actions.

The American health care system is a load of bull ****.

Whoever thought that handing over the welfare of America's health over to private corporations was mental. They don't give a care. All they want is money.

It's time for Universal Health Care. One that covers everyone equally, without the costs of the stuff we have now.

$13K

My son cut his finger and went to the Hospital. It cost me $13K for 3 stitches.

The Insurance would not cover it because it was not their approved facility.

We have some of the best care in the world. However it does need to be fixed. Insurance companies should not be able to get away with deciding to insure what ever they want, or don't. We need to restrict the advertising that the drug companies are allowed to do.
