I honestly don't think they look that bad. I realize better colors go with both but why does everybody make such a big deal about it?

It's not, really.
That's just a silly rule. Besides, rules are meant to be broken. :)

Usually, people don't mix black and brown because they tend to be different styles. Like, if you're wearing a black leather biker coat, you wouldn't mix brown boots, because they can look a little on the more...rural (cowboy) side.
But, you can too, no one says you can't!

Just please... don't do the "black-shoes, visible brown socks" combo. Or vice versa.

Well, I must be fashion retarded as well. I wear brown and black quite often. I think anything that you find in nature together can't be bad. For example animals that are brown and black. I think what ever you feel good wearing is more important that what a bunch of fashion designers come up with to make money from misguided people who will buy anything with a label on it no matter how ugly it happens to be.

not necessarily bad in all cases. I have an outfit that I wear that is a great combo of black and brown and bits of ivory and it looks wonderful.

But say wearing a pair of brown pants and black top looks boring. It just really depends on the outfit.

i think it depends more on the shades. if they are too close in color- they look a little weird together. just like navy and black- just look weird together and thats because they are nearly the same color.

i think you are fine if its a more colorful or brighter brown vs a dark shade that blends with the black instead of being a contrast to it.

Because they are too dark colors and they don't contrast well together. I kind of always wanted to combine the two, but it's instinct to reject those colors if they are put together.

I don't think they're that bad either *shrugs*
Probably 'cause both colors are sort of dark (?!) so when you pair them together they appear dull/ monotone maybe...
