First make sure they will allow you to buy it with your own money.
Then have a yard sale selling off any old things you and your parents don't want with their consent. Ask your grandparents, friends and neighbors if they have anything you can have or even take consignments to get more merchandise.

I'm not sure where you live, but it's more than likely a bit too cold to have a yard sale right now.

-Do you excel at a certain subject and have some extra time on your hands?

If so, gather together your most recent report cards and some papers you have done in the subject of your choice and offer tutoring services for kids your age and use your report card and such as a sort of portfolio for your "client" to see that you really do know what you're talking about.

-You can also babysit. If you bring along a healthy snack or craft for a child, parents are likely to throw a little extra money your way in the end for your effort.

-With the help of an adult or older brother or sister with an Ebay account, sell some unwanted things online.

-If you're good at doing makeup or hair, charge $10 per person for either service for an upcoming dance at your school or big party.

-Go to a local mom & pop shop in your area and see if they will let you sweep or clean shelves/counters/whatever for some money.

-Ask your parents for extra chores around the house.

-Make flyers advertising your service of raking leaves for your neighbors.

-Do you have a bike and some elderly neighbors? Offer to run some small errands for them to a nearby grocery store for a small fee.

-Ask your parents to put up 1/2 or 1/3 of the money in exchange for a predetermined shedual of future chores and DO THEM!

GOOD LUCK!

Also, I have to say...something that costs $400 seems like $4,000 to a 13 year old, so don't get discouraged. In addition to that, $400 is still a lot of money, so consider if you'll still want/need this item this time next year.

:)

Ask your parents for extra chores to make some money. I like the other answer about the yard sale. To go with that have a bake sale. I just bought about $20 in brownies and cookies from a teen trying to go to dance school this summer.

Ask yourself:

What can I do that people would be willing to pay me $____ to do?

Fill in the blank with a whole number denomination between $1 and $100, and try to think of something that people would actually pay you that dollar value to do.

When you add it up, you will realize that you can make more money per hour as an Entrepreneur, than what you would be paid per hour as an employee working for minimum wage.

The key is to be paid per transaction instead of per hour.

Imagine you found a job that paid you $6 an hour. Working 8 hours, your gross income (before taxes) would be only $48 dollars.

Now, asking the question:

What can I do that people would be willing to pay me $20 to do?

You would make $20 in a single transaction for doing something that may take you only 15 minutes. If you have three clients and can service them all in one hour, your gross income would be $60 per hour.

If you had enough clients to fill an 8 hour day (3 clients @ $60 an hour), that would be 24 clients each paying you $20 for a total gross of $480 for an 8 hour day (compared to $48 dollars @ $6 an hour).

That is 10 times the revenue you would make above minimum wage for the same amount of time.

Actually, you would make $480 for 6 hours of labor if you were paid $20 for every 15 minutes.

Well, since it is fall in most of the US, there is plenty of yard work to do. Check with your neighbors (especially elderly neighbors) regarding leaf raking, lawn mowing, etc.

Did you ask for bad advice?

Since you are a minor, you can sell drugs for a good profit and not have to worry about getting as severe a punishment as an adult. Find the nearest crack dealer and see what they can do with you.
