I often wake up during the middle of the night, but feel that I can not move, or breathe right. I just have to lay there and hope for the best. Does anyone know what this is? Every doctor that I go to finds it funny and doesn't believe me, I guess. But this is scary!

That happens to me, mostly after a scary dream. I just lay there sweating and trembling. And my heart rate is out of proportion. Then it goes away. Yeah it is scary but it's happening less and less.

Family Doctor's Experience:

I think you are suddenly waking from the deepest stages of sleep where paralysis occurs (paralyzed). So, the body can't move at the time when the body is in the deepest stages of sleep. This is the simplest solution just from the details given, but providing details like, how long this happens will help and other details.

Also, you could just be dreaming and it seems like you are awake.

What do you mean that every doctor finds it "funny?" I don't know any doctor that would laugh at a patient.

It's a natural defensive built in condition you are born with. This is to prevent you from harming yourself when unconcious. People(very few) who don't have it and sleep walk and do all kinds of other things are the ones who have a problem especially with their own safety. Consider yourself lucky.
