World War II did not result in a lasting peace.
The Greeks were fighting a communist insurgency by 1947.
The French were bogged down in Indochina from the end of WWII until their asses were booted out in 1954.
The Chinese Communist defeated the Koumintang Government in the 1949, and they are still not at peace.
North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950, and not only the US, but most UN members and Communist China were eventually involved in the fighting.
Since World War II, the USA has been involved in not only in the Korean War, but a war in Vietnam, combat ops in Hati, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Grenada, Bosnia, Kosovo, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
That does not even account for the dozens of colonial wars fought by the British, French, Belgians, Dutch, and Portugese, or the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina!
Where the hell do you get the idea of "lasting peace?" Just because there has not been a major war since WWII doesn't mean Peace Reigns Supreme. It just means that the nuclear stand-off between the Communist East and the Capitolist West has prevented wars from growing too big.

What is your definition of lasting peace? WWII is the last World War as to this date but other wars started and ended after it. Would there be another World War? Others say we might be close to it but time will tell.
Your second question boggles me. It seems like you are asking how many military men and women survive WWII? Then you have to count everyone from the ones that actually saw combat, others that was on the way, and the others still in bootcamp. Because technically they are all veterans of WWII.

well, i don't know about the veterans, you should just check wikipedia. But about the lasting peace... after ww2 there were a series of peace conferences. The first one, Yalta, was great. The second one, though, Potsdam, was the first step towards the cold war. Truman and Stalin hated each other and Churchill wasn't there as a buffer anymore( he had been replaced by Attlee). Stalin refused to take his troops out of the countries formerly occupied by germany, which became part of the ussr. Truman developed the "truman doctrine" or containment policy which stated the USA had to "contain" the spread of communism(they based the Korean and Vietnamese intervention in this policy). So, NO, ww2 did not result in a lasting peace as soon after it ended the cold war began.

how many veterans were alive? do you mean right after the war or now? As for lasting peace, no, Germany was divided after the war as the Soviet union would not relinquish E Germany back to the people, they considered it their territory as spoils of war, Germany is has since returned to a soviergn nation when the Berlin wall came down. The post WW 2 settlement of Israel started the war of independence in 1948, they really have never stopped fighting.

Well the "Peace" had started the Cold War(USA vs Soviets) to see who was better. There wasn't really fighting between them but the U.S had got into alot of conflicts like the Vietnam War. And the USA is currently at war with Iraq ever since the 9/11 . I can't tell you how many veterans made it out of WW2. But my guess is alot. Maybe you should look it up on google or something.
