I don't feel sorry for writters, but I do for the writers.
Writers have a role in this society and I support their efforts to get paid fairly for what they produce. Like artists and musicians, they have to live off those "grand salary" until the next gig arrives -- which can be months or even years.
Unlike other professions, many TV writers earn more in their younger years. That means smart TV writers budget accordingly to provide for their later years when their earning potential drops. So, those grand salaries aren't all they're cracked up to be.
And, yes, I'm a writer. But I don't work in LA or NY and I'm not a guild member. And, no, my salary isn't grand at all.

"Feel bad for" is a strong emotion. I don't really feel bad for them, but I can understand where they are coming from. This is like how the networks want to limit the amount of "free" clips are available on sites like YouTube. Is it so unreasonable for the writers want to get more money from other sources? Or should the exec's reap the majority of the benefits?

Guess without them, Actors/Actresses can't make the money they do. So sure, they are entitled to all the perks they may not be getting if you think about it.......
But I won't lose sleep over it though....
