For anyone who says marijuana is dangerous, kills brain cells, causes you to go crazy, leads to use of other more dangerous drugs, etc..., you've obviously not kept up with the times. Many studies have been done since these misconceptions and outright lies first surfaced. Some of these studies were funded by the U.S. government. The vast majority of them have all concluded the same thing: Marijuana is comparatively safe, though not entirely benign, when compared to other substances, even commonly available ones such as caffeine and aspirin. The main "danger" from smoking marijuana is the smoke, not the THC which is what gets you high. And there are plenty of other ways to ingest marijuana besides smoking it. Other dangers might include decreased reaction times which would make it inadvisable to use while driving or operating heavy equipment (just like NyQuil says), or similar effects, but toxicity isn't an issue. Honestly folks, caffeine is more toxic than THC.

I think marijuana should be legalized. Legalizing, or even decriminalizing it, would remove control from drug dealers and traffickers. It would stop the huge flow of money spent trying (quite unsuccessfully) to stamp it out. Prohibition of this type never works. Remember alcohol prohibition? What did we accomplish with that? We made a lot of criminals very rich, but that's about it. We didn't keep people from making or drinking alcohol. I think taking the profits away from real criminals would certainly benefit society. Ceasing the idiocy of locking up nonviolent pot smokers while letting baby rapers and the like out on probation because of prison overcrowding would, in my opinion, benefit society, don't you think?

I think it's comical to read comments like, "Just think of all the people who would drive around after smoking it if it were legalized," or other such naive statements. Hey, Kevin K., here's a news flash for you: The people who would smoke it if it were legal are mostly the same ones who are smoking it NOW. And what makes you think that if it were decriminalized or legalized that there would be some mass compulsion to smoke it and then go drive cars?

Oh yeah, one more thing. I've said this many times before in similar posts, but my response to those who say it should be illegal because it is dangerous (which it isn't) is this: If we based the legality of anything simply on whether or not it is dangerous, we'd have to outlaw or ban just about everything. If something is a health issue, then treat it as a health issue, NOT a criminal issue.

It isn't the government's job to think for you! Stop simply buying all the lies they try to sell. If you'll look closely, you'll notice they've had to back off on some of their positions because smart people aren't swallowing it anymore. Think for yourself. Read the reports, they're out there for all to see. I'll help you out by posting the link to the Institute of Medicine report. It's lengthy, but worth the read.

Honestly, I lol when I read people's comments about marijuana being a public health issue. If you can, think outside of the United States for a moment. Many, many other countries have legalized marijuana. If this drug were nearly as harmful as we are forced to believe, wouldn't these other countries be in pretty poor shape by now?? Realistically, if cannabis were made legal, we wouldn't see much of a change in society from the way it is today. Some would start smoking pot because of its newfound legalism, and others would quit because of it (some just do it because it's illegal). Sure alcohol, sipped lightly and kept to a minimum shouldn't hurt your body.. BUT if you drink too much in a short period of time, it will kill you. Marijuana simply cannot be abused to the point of a lethal overdose. Even potatoes are more harmful than marijuana (look it up). Also, marijuana does NOT kill brain cells. Science has debunked that fact repeatedly by now. What marijuana does do.. is affect your short term memory. This happens because marijuana is fat-soluble. The brain is mostly comprised of...fat! So, theoretically (and it IS just a theory) the brain retains a lot of the THC and therefore, it bogs you down and can take years to completely be out of your system. The main downside to this substance is that it can rob you of your ambition. Some people have the tendency to become what are known as pot-heads, and can become total slobs if they let this substance take control. That's pretty much the case with any substance, though. Some people need the escape. So, society wouldn't be in shambles if this demonized drug were made legal, but I'm not saying it would make things better. The main positive change we would see would be in health care. Yeah, yeah, people say that other drugs work better. Other unnatural, more addictive, man-made chemicals that are probably pushed my pharmaceutical lobbyists, who are probably also one of the main reasons marijuana is still illegal. But there are illnesses that don't have treatment. For example, I used to smoke marijuana as treatment for my IBS. It helped. A lot. Marijuana wasn't the first thing I turned to; I actually asked my doctor if there were any drugs that would help. He said "No, not really". The health card is the only one I can really play when it comes to societal benefits.

I use to smoke years ago but stopped because it lost its appeal. Guess I couldn't hang-out with Willie Nelson. I think it is illegal because we have a whole branch of government set-up to wage war on it Indeed, the war costs billions of dollars a year, money that seems not well spent. And now Black Water is going to get in on that pie. Then there is that old chestnut that weed is a gateway drug. To that I say, show me the facts (not biased facts, real ones). Personally I think all drugs should be legalized but regulated. Illegal drugs is the biggest source of street crime in this country. Make them legal and let human nature sort out the weak.

It has killed less people by overdose in it's entire history than alcohol did yesterday. It has enormous medicinal possibilities. Hemp is one of the strongest and most versatile fibers in the world. 99% of the violence associated with Marijuana trafficking would be wiped out in much the same way the lifting of Prohibition wiped out the violence associated with the back alley liquor dens and Chicago and NY mafias. Nobody smokes a joint and says to themselves "it's time to rob or kill someone". Stock in companies such as Doritos and Cheetos would explode. All art. music, and literature (including our own Constitution) have all benefited from Marijuana smoking. The majority of the Founding Fathers of The United States grew marijuana on their plantations. Thomas Jefferson smoked Marijuana to help with his migraines.

Marijuana is illegal purely due to ignorance. I see some people here actually believe that "marijuana kills brain cells". Unbelieveable! The study that was done to support this was flawed. Monkeys were subjected to marijuana smoke being forced into their lungs to the point of asphyxiation. The brain cells that died were due entirely to a lack of oxygen. You can hold your breath and kill your brain cells. Alcohol kills brain cells.

Marijuna should be legal for a array or reasons, the biggest is that there our laws our hyprocritical; saying beer and tabacoo is ok and saying pot is bad is not a good message to send to the world. The facts are in, worldwide weed has killed not one person, while tabacoo and booze kill millions of people everywhere worldwide. MArijuna is not dangerous, it was made illegal in the 1930s because a man named Henry Aslinger made crazy claims that pot made "white women seek hispanic and black men", obviously making it a RACIST law.

I smoke marijuana for medical purposes. I have Chron's disease. Its really hard for me to eat a lot, and smoking has helped me. I stop taking 23 pills a day and started smoking everyday. Smoking helps with asthma, calms your lungs, breaks up and brings up Flem. I agree with legalizing marijuana. Move to Denver, Colorado or anywhere in California.

before the 20th century 75% of the worlds paper, rope ,clothing, etc. was provided by marijuana. during the rule of henry the viii everyone was required to grow pot. from 1630 to the 1800's hemp was legal tender. in 1760, you could be arrested and jailed for not growing pot, because it was one of the keys to being an independant country. among things made from pot in the early days of our country, were, levi jeans, american flags, rope, paper, guttenberg and king james bibles, and early drafts of the declaration of independence and the u.s. constitution.
in 1936 time magazine heralded the invention of a new machine for processing pot into pulp for paper at 1/4 the cost and with 1/5 the pollution of wood. this did not sit well with companies like hearst paper, dupont industries and other big companies. 1 acre of pot can produce 4 times the paper as 1 acre of wood. you can get 4 times the celluose from pot as you can from corn, wich would equal more, cheaper fuel. get on the web and look a lecture titled-- grow more pot- by a guy named jello biafra, and listen to what he has to say. as for all these people who talk about short term memory loss and a gateway drug and such, sorry, bunch of government bull ****. to say nothing of the medical value of pot!! did you know pot seeds can provide more protien than soy beans?
