Mercantilism was the driving force behind colonization. Mercantilism is an economic theory based on the belief that there is a limited amount of wealth in the world and that colonies exist solely for the benefit of the mother country....colonies provide the mother country with raw materials, ready-made markets for domestic goods, and a safety valve for excess population. Why else would anyone establish colonies if not for their economic benefit?

Mercantilism affected the exploration by decreasing the numbers that were going to come to trade cause it only benefited the mother country. Europe was taking so much money from this that some of the travelers did not want to come. The colonization was greatly affected cause if they imported they would pay a little extra and then if they had no extra they wouldnt have the supply and led to trouble.

Countries went out to find precious metals, and if they couldn't subjugate the locals to mine for these items, they would send out people to do do. If they could subjugate the locals, they would send out the overseers to supervise.
