First of all, if you're writing a paper, you should know that "deterrent" is a noun, not a verb. The verb form is "deter," so you would say that the death penalty does not DETER crime, or in the noun form you would say it does not act as a DETERRENT.

Factually, you could give statistics showing that violent crime rates per capita are generally higher in states (and countries) that use capital punishment (see website below).

Emotionally, you could argue that this is because of the hypocrisy that comes with a government that takes a stand against murder...by killing people. The government becomes the bad parent who says, "do as I say, not as I do."

I hope that helps. Good luck on your paper!

It might seem that the death penalty is a deterrent for the simple reason that it is a punishment no one would want to go through. It might seem that it is a deterrent because of the effect it has on families of murderers as well.

However, why wouldn't you want to go with the facts? Rates of violent crimes are higher in states and in regions with the death penalty than in those without it.

For a punishment to deter others it must be swift and sure. The death penalty is neither. (Why not?? Over 50 of the 124 innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.)

Most criminals do not even think they will be caught, let alone punished (if they think at all)

I am not sure what you are asking but I think that you are wondering why people use emotional arguments to support capitol punishment when facts show that it is not a good deterrent. In my opinion, facts are the more important way to view such an issue but they are much weaker then emotions when it comes to reaching people's minds. Emotional appeals enter ones mind on multiple levels and are much harder to sort through for their truth or falsity. Emotional appeals are the preferred method of arguing when your side of the argument isn't as strong as the other's.

Kind of self explanatory isn't it? Emotional anything is generally not based on fact, but rather perceptions. Lots of people seem to only operate in that realm. Fact, is that which can not only be proven, but that the results are repeatable. So, to answer the second portion of your question, as politically incorrect as it may seem, capital punishment is biblical (Old Testiment) and this country was based on Christian beliefs -- which begins with belief in the Old Testiment. I suggest you read Leviticus. And for those who disagree, try and reason through the close parallel between our laws and those of the ten commandments.

Emotional/ factual it's all a matter of perception anyway.

I look at it more as a financial issue. If someone is guilty of 1st degree murder then they have hurt society by depriving us of a useful citizen which hurts everyone not to mention the victim's family and friends.

To House, feed and guard this criminal is another expense and drain on society.

A bullet costs a buck. Better to be rid of rubbish than store it in the basement. Need someone to pull the trigger? I'll do it, and I won't feel bad about it either.
