No, that's not true. A large portion of tuition is subsidized by the government here, but college (community college) still costs a couple of thousand dollars a year at least.

University (which is "college" in the US) costs about $5000/year in tuition on average (some programs are more). You also are responsible for paying for books, residence etc. on top of that. That's for Canadian citizens. Many schools charge more (sometimes MUCH MORE) to international students.

There are some European countries with free tuition, but most countries do charge international students.

Hello. No, college is not free in Canada but it can be cheaper than many schools in the U.S., depending upon the school and cost of living in the region you choose.

First, be careful about your terminology. The terms "college" and "university" are not interchangeable terms like they are here in the U.S. You’ll want to look for a Canadian "university" for a bachelor's degree. A Canadian "college" is similar to our junior or community colleges. Most Canadian universities (and many colleges) are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and therefore you can apply for the Stafford Student Loan and your parents can apply for the U.S. Parents PLUS loan (both of which offer the most attractive interest rates and deferment options). Tax credits are also available.

The website below was designed to help American students explore post-secondary opportunities in Canada and you should find all the information you need on the website: search engines to find the school you’re looking for, how to apply for U.S. government loans and credits, what you need to do to get the right documentation, guides, tips and even a packing list! If you have questions after reviewing the website, you can send them to ‘U.S. Students to Canada’ via their feedback form and they’ll get right back to you or even call you if you want.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!

High Schools (secondary schools) are called ....Collegiate Institutes as part of their name. We would say "Terry Fox Collegiate Institute" instead of "Terry Fox High". High Schools, C.I. 's are free, but thats just part of the normal public school system, they are not post-secondary college or universities. Post-secondary (ie- after graduating highschool) education is not free, it costs students directly for tuition and text books. "Foreign students" studying here unfortunately have to pay much higher prices, perhaps because their families hadn't been paying Canadian taxes which pays partially for the overall costs of running universities. Also, here, generally "College" is a place limited to earning diploma's, no degrees. Universities are places to earn the higher bachelor degrees, masters degrees, and PhD's.
