Russia has become a largely capitialistic country since the fall of the Soviet Union, although the government still intervenes in the economy. China still has state control over some aspects of its economy, but it has also embraced market economics and private enterprise since 1979 to create massive economic growth.
Of the world's countries today, Cuba and North Korea have the greatest state control over their economies. Cuba has a limited amount of commerce in small markets and enclaves. North Korea has the least free enterprise, with even small vegetable stands greatly restricted.
No country has ever really implemented the idea of direct rule by all the people, even though many have falsely purported to do so for propaganda purposes. Communistic societies generally become dictatorial because of the lack of restraint on the power of leaders.

Communism and dictatorship are not the same thing. It is possible to be a capitalist dictator. There are two distinctions: communist vs. capitalist, and dictatorship vs. democracy. It is possible to be a communist dictatorship (i.e. Cuba), a communist or socialist democracy (Venezuela), a capitalist democracy (America) and a capitalist dictatorship (any number of countries where the ruling party always gets 99% of the vote).
Cuba is still communist. China is transforming into a capitalist dictatorship. The Soviet Union was communist, however it no longer exists and Russia is capitalist. If you were taught that Russia is communist I would question everything else you have been taught.

Yes, schools, society, the media and the government are 100% wrong.
Communism, now, is a tactic to scare ignorant people. When ever you hear someone on CNN constantly repeat “communist” after saying China, they are attempting to scare you in order to make you listen to them.
Communism, in reality, is something else.
You may know that Marxian theories that human society will evolve through different stages/levels. Here they are in order:
1. Feudalism
2. Capitalism
3. Socialism
4. Communism
Humans produce to survive, and so naturally socialize in order to produce.
1. Feudalism is the first step. People are basically slaves, and just producing.
2. Capitalism, there’s more freedom. People try to be the most efficient as they can. This period allows for effective techniques, disciplines, technology, etc. (Russia failed in that it jumped from Feudalism straight to Socialism).
3. Socialism is where the labourers control the government (Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics -or- USSR). Now that they are united in production and are efficient in production (thanks to the first two levels) they can now produce not only what they need freely, but what the want freely. Providing for everyone, and doing all that you can. A social transformation at this point basically (could last ten years or a hundred years).
4. Communism is when the people realize “hey, we‘ve become so efficient in production, and so good willed towards our fellow man, that there is no point in a government at all. We don‘t need someone to look over us and regulate us. We are abundant in goods, we are happy, good natured”. The people do what ever they want, how they want, and everyone will be fine. No borders, no nations, no control, and everyone is abundant and satisfied.

Communism is also the dictatorship of a country by a powerful person or authoritative group. Russia is no longer communist. It is previously called the U.S.S.R which was communist and died down around 1991. China is only partly communist because it's industries are so affected by outside influence. It is communist in terms of its laws, but capitalist in terms of its business. Cuba is a communist but I don't think it will last much longer. Fidel Castro is losing his grip.
