I'm a long time RPG player. I haven't tried the MMO version, for a couple of reasons. First of all, I've had bad experiences with playing online games that are dependent on other people...Most of them have been too stupid to own a computer, let alone try to use it in a social setting.
I also don't really have the ability to log on when others say I need to be there...It really needs to be something that I can join when I have the time, but not worry about when I don't.
Anyone have any suggestions on good games that would allow me to interface with others on a when-I-want and with-who-I-want kind of basis?

Really? A guild isn't "required" in WOW?

I'll give you a couple and why:
World of Warcraft:
I Played it since it came out, up until last summer. You really can solo the game, but it gets boring without the social interactions. The game really comes out with ventrilo. (I heard it has in game mic now? *Coughs* Copy of DnD) Anyways, if your a casual gamer, like most adults I've met off of there, it's a good game.
City of Heroes/Villans:
I've played that since 2004, on and off. It's a great game for all ages; with all of its knew FREE expasions that come out every so often. The game-play is amazing, but the servers sucked. Now, since the upgrade, the lag/bugs are down to a minimum, and server transfer is now an option. Did I mention mostly mature people play that game? You can have a "global ignore" which global meaning their account. That's quite nice.
Guild wars:
I haven't personally PLAYED it, but most of my friends have. They say it's a good investment. When they get Owned/bored of WoW and CS, they hop onto Guild wars any time for free. So many people have found refuge in guild wars compared to WoW, due to it's FREE, and I mean always FREE playing. It's PvP I've heard is phonomenal, it's like...99% skill, 1% gear.
Overall, If you have the money, Play WoW. 1 out of 20 people I've met on their are either:
A. Retarded
B. Ignorant/annoying
C. Asshole (A big sometimes with the spammers/racists)
D. A 5~16 year old kid (Usually 5~13, And yes I've met 5 year olds) that are just so immature, it makes you want to strangle them.
Well, I hoped I helped.

*EDIT* Seeing your edit on guilds of WoW, yes they are required in some points. Most guilds are fun with people your age. (I myself am a mature 16 year old, and I've been in many adult only guilds.)
If you like to PvE, which is only scratching the surface of the game, sure go ahead. But if you want to get THROUGH all the way down, join a guild. Have fun with your peers hehe. If I was still playing, I'd help you, like I have a many off of answers. Good luck.

I'd recommend World of Warcraft; despite the flack it gets, it truly is the best MMO out there. I never played an MMO before, but WoW gave me everything I wanted in a game: the ability to play at my own pace, to socialize with friends, challenges that are not impossible to overcome, and many different options. As a gamer in my late 20s, I don't have a lot of free time, so this really fit the bill. My mom is hooked - and she's over 50.
In WoW, you're not dependent on other people at all. You can solo from level 1 to level 70 without ever grouping with someone else. Some quests you won't be able to complete, and you won't have as good of gear as players who go through instances, but if you're just looking for a casual game and can't be available for group raids, it's an option, not a requirement.
There is a monthly fee of $15 (give or take, depending on where you live), but I find it reasonable. You get all the patches and updates for free. There is a lot you can do, and the game is very open ended. I've played on numerous servers, and I've found both good and bad players. My recommendation would be to play on Horde side rather than Alliance; there are fewer immature players on Horde - but you'll find them everywhere, on every game.

I'd hate to say it, but "World of warcraft". People knock it constantly, but to be honest, its a really entertaining game from level 1-70. At level 70, to really enjoy the game, you need a decent guild.
If you only plan on playing the game 10 hours a week, it will entertain you for months.
