"Hoedown" actually refers to the time after getting the hay in from the fields. It was long back-breaking labour, and generally took a week or two to accomplish, depending on how many people you had helping you, and how many acres you had in hay.

When you could lay your "hoe down" you were able to relax. And most people liked to play music and party to relax after all that hard work.

This type of entertainment was adopted in BOTH countries, especially in the farming communities.

Now, if you want a real CANADIAN get-together, you should look up SHIVAREE....

It's more well known as a jamboree in some locations in the
states. Others, it's the Stomp. Or the Virginia, "Reel". I think it's called the Tennessee Hoedown in Tennessee. They also
have them down Texas way.
There's lots of country music and dancing and banjo strumming and guitar picking.
Why it's a party on the dance floor! And everyones' welcome
to kick up their heels and join in the fun. Y'all come!
Oh, and it's an American tradition.

A hoedown is a dance festival/party such as a square dance that you'll often see the Beverly Hillbillys do. It's most often known as something that southern country folks in America do for entertainment.

I'm in the USA. It means people dancing, playing instruments- often folk or bluegrass music and having refreshments while enjoying a good time with other folks. It's like a big party in the country at a barn or another place to get together and have fun.
