WASHINGTON (AFP) - Sixty percent of all Americans strongly want the country to change direction after nearly seven years of President George W. Bush's rule, according to a new opinion poll released late Sunday.

The survey by The Washington Post and ABC News indicated that only 24 percent of those surveyed think the nation is on the right track, and three-quarters said they want the next president to chart a different political course.

A new direction is wanted not only by Democrats, but also by three-quarters of Independents and even half of Republicans, according to the poll.

More than six in 10 called the war in Iraq not worth fighting, and nearly two-thirds gave the national economy negative marks.

Just wondering how you sleep when you have so many excuses to think up. It must be hard work cheerleading this administration these days...

I am a true Conservative. The poll results you cite are exactly as I predicted. You see, President Bush is not, by any true measure, a Conservative. While he has some Conservative leanings he is by far much more of a Moderate. The results of Liberal philosophy in a president are the Carter administration. Sheer disaster economically and in foreign policy.

The results of a moderate presidency are what we see in the current administration. The tendency of a Moderate president to try to accommodate everyone leads to the muddled up mess we find ourselves in. Examples: Tax cuts (good Conservative move) with increased domestic spending (bad Liberal move). The result is a muddled mess. The responce to terrorist attack was quick and decisive (good Conservative move) after engaging in battle, there was a lack of agility and slowness to ratchet up the action a notch or two when we met insurgent resistance (typical Moderate lack of decisiveness).

What the people are saying is that they long for the solid Conservative leadership that the mighty Ronald Reagan provided. One look at the vote count for his first election following the Liberal Carter administration and then even greater numbers for his reelection proves my point. No one could get numbers like that unless he was supported by Republicans, Democrats and Independents.

I am a Republican and I, too, want serious change. Not farther to the left but much farther to the right!

Believe me, if Ronald Reagan ran today, he would get the same massive support he got then. America is hungry for good Conservative leadership. Not the fits and starts we have seen from this administration and certainly not a Liberal, Jimmy Carter style disaster again.

I love how you just picked the numbers that bolster your argument and tried very hard to make all the numbers look good for democrats.
Your 60% was correct but what you left out was that 60% want a totally new direction not just different from President Bush. 60% of us are unhappy with all the politicians in Washington. Not just the Republicans all of them.
Did you also read the numbers on the Democratically controled senate you know that 21% approval rating.
What most of us really want is for the Senate and House to listen to the people that pay their salaries. We are sick and tired of people who do nothing and expect to not only get paid but to get reelected.
As far as the war and the economy when you read who they asked these questions of you will find that most of them were democrats and so have a biased opinion.
Lastly, isn't time to quit hating George? In just over 14 months he will no longer be President. If you and your party want to win in '08' it is time to start telling those of us sitting on the fence why we should vote for you. I'm not voting for the man or woman who just rants about how little he/she is like George. He's not running.

I am never a cheerleader for Jorge Bush. I think he's a total idiot! Try to remember that Jorge is not running for President - a socialist, power-hungry pro-amnesty witch is!

However, the direction that the socialist Democrats is not the right direction either. This is especially the case with Hillary!

How can the Democrats be a cheerleader for a candidate who has a position on amnesty and DL for illegals that is contrary to MOST Americans?

I have a very hard time figuring out just how you're wrapping your mind around this one. On one hand you're stating that many Republicans want to see the Country go in a new direction and on the other you're accusing the Republicans of being cheerleaders for the Administration. Are you Hillary Clinton? I mean you're flip-flopping all over the place here. How are you going to excuse your own twisted reasoning?

Here's a clue; many of us have wanted to see the Country head in a new direction. That's how Democrats gained control of the Congress, HOWEVER, instead of doing what they should have, those idiots turned the whole thing into an exercise in futility. They've not only disappointed us, they've disillusioned their own base.

I think you have a lot to learn.

What gets me maximum is once you critisize a corrupt man or woman of one party, somebody consistently immediately factors out yet another corrupt flesh presser of the choice party...there are some distance too many examples in the two events of corrupt politicians that we could consistently be plenty greater centred on electing worth applicants for substantial workplaces, and not justifying one jerk's habit via asserting the pathetic habit of somebody else. inspite of the party, all and sundry who's corrupt and immoral had no business company optimum this united states-that is going for Democrats AND Republicans. Bush is an occasion of the worst our united states has to furnish, and he has lots of commercial company between the Democrats in skill appropriate now--sickening. We deserve greater appropriate.

No one really debates that the country wants a change. The false leap is when people start claiming the country wants all sorts of liberal initiatives. I am unhappy because we spend to much money, arent addressing illegal immigration (most agree) and because we arent serious about fighting the war rather than just playing around

The poll has an error in it.
If you ask people if youwant a change from being "ruled" by a person you would expect the number to be much higher.
I think the poll shows just how many people Like Bush.

A better question is why can liberals not take a honest poll to support their postion.
My suggested answer is that because the postion is not defenceable

Mr. Bush is a good man. He has done some good things like the war against terrorism and the economy.
From President Truman, I learned the expression: "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics."
The Washington Post is a rag put out by left wing liberal loonies. They make up poll questions, take their own polls, interpret their own results and present it as news.
You and they can stick their prejudice where the sun does not shine.
